Gluten Intolerance or Glyphosate Poisoning?

by | Jul 13, 2017

I hope you’ve had a good week and you’ve enjoyed the school holidays.  We’ve had quite a few parents bringing their children in for a free session on our Crystal Light Bed.  If you haven’t tried it yet for your littlies then call us to book a 15-minute appointment during these school holidays.

July is Gut Health Month at Simply Natural and this week I shared a couple of articles on Facebook that have had more views, likes, shares and comments than I’ve ever seen.

Here is one of them….

“Gluten Intolerance is really GLYPHOSATE POISONING

What if….”gluten intolerance” is really “glyphosate poisoning”?

Gluten has been in wheat since it was first grown. Sure, there have always been folks who have problems digesting wheat or grains with gluten. Today, about 50% of the world have problems with gluten. (1) Something has changed.

That “something” is glyphosate.

Glyphosate has only been on this planet since Monsanto patented it as “Roundup” in 1973. This chemical herbicide goes by 32 or more trade names and, now that the patent protection expired in 2000, is made by nine chemical companies — most of whom, not coincidentally, are also in the drug business. Over 200 million pounds …”  READ MORE

Glyphosate, although it’s not considered as toxic to humans, is very toxic to our gut bugs. And conventional medicine is only just beginning to understand the importance of the bacteria in our gut. These good bugs play a number of different roles in our health. They actually do a lot of the work digesting particular foods so we can absorb the nutrients from them. They synthesise vitamins and they create the mucous lining of our gut protecting it and making it slippery. This helps faecal matter pass through more easily. (And saves scrubbing the toilet bowl.)  And the good bugs in our gut actually make up a large part of our immune system.

Did you know that 30% of the bulk of our stools is actually comprised of dead bacteria?  Without a good supply of gut bugs we might suffer from constipation, diarrhoea or bloating. Our digestive system just doesn’t work well.  A healthy digestive system houses around 100 trillion bacteria of up to 1000 different species. Each one plays a role in our health and a diverse range of gut bugs is as important to our health as a diverse range of plants is to the ecosystem of a rainforest. Glyphosate disrupts the way the good bugs in your gut function.

According to one of the articles I shared this week, it’s becoming common practice among wheat farmers to spray their crops with Roundup, which contains Glyphosate, a couple of days prior to harvesting.  This apparently improves the yield of the crop. It also means that much more Glyphosate will end up in the flour we then ingest.

Here’s a fairly disturbing graph of the correlation between coeliac disease (a severe sensitivity of the gut to gluten) and the use of Glyphosate in wheat farming.

Now it has to be said that correlation does not mean causation but something is seriously changing in our reaction to wheat.

According to The RealFarmacy.com

“Roundup significantly disrupts the functioning of beneficial bacteria in the gut and contributes to thepermeability of the intestinal wall and consequent expression of autoimmune disease symptoms….

….What’s worse is that the negative impact of glyphosate exposure is slow and insidious over months and years as inflammation gradually gains a foothold in the cellular systems of the body.

The consequences of this systemic inflammation are most of the diseases and conditions associated with the Western lifestyle:

-Gastrointestinal disorders

-Obesity

-Diabetes

-Heart Disease

-Depression

-Autism

-Infertility”

So it’s pretty clear that if you eat wheat you need to be careful its organic. And if you already have health issues or an autoimmune disease then you would probably benefit from eliminating it from your diet altogether. I also suggest getting the help of a good Naturopath to repair your gut and restock the good bugs.

Taking a daily probiotic is also a really good idea but it’s important to know that “over the counter” probiotics vary greatly in quality and effectiveness and may not necessarily be the right variety of good bugs for your system. Getting professional advice is recommended and “Practitioner Only” probiotics can be prescribed.

But wait there’s more…   Once your gut is repaired and you’re taking the right probiotics you actually need to feed them the right foods. To put it simply, the good bugs flourish on good healthy nutritious foods and the bad bugs flourish on junk food. So even if you take a high-quality probiotic, if you don’t feed it right it will die and you’re wasting your time and money.

And did you know that raw foods come with their own probiotics and enzymes? As revolting as it sounds, it’s the microbes that naturally coexist on particular fruits and vegies that cause the food to rot if it’s not harvested. These exact probiotics and enzymes are helpful for humans to digest these foods. Isn’t nature amazing? A good rule of thumb is that if a food doesn’t decompose over time it probably isn’t going to be good for you. Just think of all the things in your pantry with a really long shelf life. Of course, there are some exceptions like nuts and seeds, but if something is highly processed and filled with preservatives your digestive system will struggle with it.

And unfortunately, when fruits and vegies are processed or cooked they can lose these enzymes and probiotics making them harder to digest and harder for us to get the nutrients from them.

And lastly, did you know that the pectin in apples works together with the gut bacteria to create a soothing coating for the gut wall? The old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is probably far truer than you think. I suggest sticking to the common sense recommendation of at least 5 serves of vegies and two pieces of fruit a day.

Now if you have trouble getting your kids to eat their vegies, our Naturopath, Kimberley Nightingale, has some great tips for you.  You can read her article “Getting Kids to Eat Their Vegies”  HERE
