Breaking Those Bad Habits

by | Dec 12, 2016

Alison BurtonI hope all is well in your world and that you’re enjoying the lead up to Christmas.  What a hot day we had yesterday.  (I do love summer.) Tunstall Square was a little quieter than usual for this time of the year. I think people tend to hit the big shopping centres when the thermometer hits 30 degrees but don’t forget we have air-conditioning and lots of gorgeous gifts for Christmas.

We’re a bit slow off the mark but we did hang some tinsel and Christmas decorations in the shop yesterday and we had the Christmas Carols playing.   We thought we’d better get into the spirit.

Although the car park was quiet we’re extra busy in the clinic at the moment. We know that Christmas isn’t always an easy or happy time for people.  It’s often a time when problematic family issues rear their ugly head. Or it might be a reminder that a loved one who has passed over (like my dear Dad) is no longer with you.  By the way, thank you to everyone who sent their condolences recently.

We’ve also found that an increasing number of people are actually coming to us to break some old unwanted habits or addictions.  They’re not waiting til the New Year to make their resolutions but are getting a head start on 2017.

I’m sure you’ve made plenty of New Year’s resolutions to eat less, drink less, quit smoking or start exercising.  Regardless of the best of intentions you have on January 1st most people have slipped back into bad habits by Jan 31st.

Since it takes somewhere between 3 and 7 weeks to break a habit and establish a healthier one it’s not such a bad idea to start now so January is easy.  One of the things we’ve helped a lot of people with this year is giving up drinking alcohol.  I actually think that as people become more enlightened and spiritually evolved they realise that alcohol is holding them back.

I must confess I’ve done my fair share of drinking over the years but I actually quit about 3 years ago after a session on a Crystal Light Bed.  The session was in preparation for a retreat in Brazil and we were required to avoid alcohol, meat and a few other things for a period of time before and then for three months afterwards.

During the session the practitioner guided me/my soul to release any ancestral patterns that didn’t serve me.  I got a flash of a memory my great aunt who had a problem with alcohol. I felt her presence very strongly and then I felt her leave.  It’s was bit woo woo even for me, but I actually haven’t felt like drinking since.  I did have half a glass of champagne for the toast at my daughter’s wedding but I didn’t actually enjoy it.

For people who want to stop drinking, smoking or over eating we’ve also found Hypnosis to be really powerful.  It can fairly quickly help change habits by simply interrupting the habitual behaviour with a new thought or action.  For example an hypnotic suggestion can trigger you to prefer soda water rather than wine, or fruit and vegies rather than cake and chocolate.

Many years ago, when I was still a drinker, I was at our annual Hypnotherapists’ Christmas party and one of my colleagues hypnotised a small group of us to imagine the soda water WAS champagne. I have never tasted such delicious soda water!  We got progressively more relaxed and uninhibited. I ended up teaching everyone how to dance the Macarena.  We had the best night with no risk of drink-driving and no hangovers.

Direct Hypnotic suggestion like that can be really effective and the effects can last anywhere from a few hours to days or weeks or even permanently.  If someone has a serious addiction though deeper work needs to be done.

I’ve come to believe that addiction is the result of feeling disconnected –  Disconnection from our heart and soul, disconnection from others and disconnection from nature. This disconnection will leave you with a yearning for something that’s hard to put your finger on.  This unfulfilled yearning is not comfortable. And what do we do when we’re not comfortable? We distract ourselves or we numb the discomfort.  We drink, smoke, go to the pokies or we comfort eat.

When you repair these things you don’t need the addiction.  You feel well and happy and don’t need to distract or numb yourself.  So here are my suggestions….

Connect with your heart and soul:

  • Learn to relax deeply
  • Take up Yoga, Tai Chi or Qi Gong
  • Meditate
  • Write your thoughts and feelings in a journal
  • Keep a Gratitude Journal
  • Listen to music that uplifts you
  • Do something creative
  • Heal your past hurts
  • Listen to your intuition

Connect with others:

  • Repair or make peace with damaged relationships
  • Let go of resentment and blame
  • Join a group of like-minded people
  • Learn to be your authentic self
  • Heal you’re self-esteem so you feel like a worthy friend
  • End toxic relationships

Connect with nature:

  • Spend at least 20 minutes in nature every day
  • Be mindful and fully present  to what’s around you
  • Get a pet or borrow someone else’s for a while
  • Have pots plants in your home and work (and care for them)
  • Grow a vegie garden
  • Remember what a miracle of nature your body is
  • Eat foods from nature not from factories
  • Drink plenty of water
